Now is the Time for Employee Ownership

There has never been a better time for employee-ownership. It used to be difficult and expensive for an owner to sell a business to employees. But that is no longer the case.

New in 2024, the Canadian government passed Bill C-69 provides financial benefits for companies that transition to employee ownership:

  • After completing a qualifying transfer of ownership to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), the seller is exempt from paying capital gains on the first $10 Million.
  • This results in over $3 Million in savings!
  • Plus other capital gains can be deferred up to 10 years.

Employee ownership is a values-based solution to the succession challenges faced by many family-owned businesses.

It’s a win-win-win opportunity:

  • The seller pays less tax
  • Employees become employee-owners at no personal cost
  • Communities benefit from the stability of local ownership.

Tallgrass makes it easier and more affordable for family-owned businesses to transition to employee ownership — allowing owners to reap the financial rewards from their business while also preserving their legacy. Tallgrass is a trust-worthy partner and investor.
